Deputy District Attorney

Dec 27, 2012 by David Grapilon
Firm Name: San Diego County, CA •
Case Style: Gang Prosecution Unit

We in San Diego are fully on-board with TrialPad. We have ordered a total of 15 iPads loaded with TrialPad, and expect to order another 30 or so next year. Our attorneys have used it successfully in various cases ranging from petty thefts to Homicide.

Our biggest IT issue is security and file transfers, but we’ve been able to stay completely off the web by using the direct file transfer method the USB cable and iTunes. We are going to test out the WebDAV function soon, but I’m still in discussions with our IT about that. Even our Public Defender is moving to the iPads because of its effectiveness in our courtrooms. Our IT is now fully behind us and helping us to find ways to work around issues, rather than throwing the issues up as roadblocks.

There is no good reason why any office can’t experiment with it. We made a short office-wide presentation on it last month and that created buzz and excitement about the iPads, and it motivated everyone to start asking their bosses when they could start using it. Since then, more iPads and equipment have been ordered and other DDAs are excited about using it in court. We are using them on a check-out basis, where DDAs use them according to their upcoming trial schedules, then check them back in for someone else to use. We use GoodReader for general file management, and Quickoffice for Microsoft doc compatibility for reading and last-minute edits. PowerPoint can still be run “the old-fashioned way” off a laptop using an HDMI output cable for openings and closings if the DDA chooses, as well as Sanction transcripts, etc.

You are welcome to use us as an example, and contact me directly about our experience with it. I don’t get paid, get discounts, or any benefits from Ian or TrialPad. On the contrary, I experimented with Exhibit View, Sanction, Trial Director for iPad, and Exhibit A because they were cheaper. I found TrialPad to be the most comprehensive and effective. And, Ian always contacted me when I had complaints, concerns, or questions about how everything worked, which I always appreciate. The latest 3.0 update addressed most of our issues. We are working on another “wish list” of things we would like addressed, based on our now more extensive use and field testing.
